Reducing Mental Stress
Reducing Mental Stress
According to the National Institute of Mental Health
(NIMH), about 80% of Americans have experienced stress at some point in
their lives. Stress can affect everyone and anyone falling under any age group.
In plain psychology, stress is a feeling of
emotional strain and pressure. A little stress is positive and can help
develop competitiveness. However, research says that too much stress can
lead to heart attack and ultimately death.
Symptoms
Some of the symptoms of mental stress can be:
·
Compulsive behavior: compulsive behaviors are actually a desperate attempt to counter one's
mental obsessions. Such actions may further lead to addictions or substance abuse.
·
Anxiety: Often occurrences of sadness are normal. But when feelings turn
overwhelming depression and anxiety follow.
·
Mood Swings: Too many emotional oscillations at one time sets the mental pendulum
disturbed leading to higher anger levels and irritation.
·
Insomnia: Sleep disorders are major red signals.
How to reduce Mental Stress
Few effective ways to counter stress are:
·
Self-Acceptance: One should realize that imperfections are everywhere, even in ourselves.
Forgiving oneself is the ultimate objective behind forgiving others.
·
Meditation: Breathing exercises, practicing Asanas are known to counter the negative
thoughts and relax the mind.
·
Realistic approach: Superheroes are comic characters. Any normal human is prone to unjustified
criticism, hurts, and occasional 'defeats'. So take it easy!
·
Socialize: Share your feelings with friends and loved ones.
·
Creativity: Everyone is good at something. Take a hobby. You may realize your hidden
creative potential and ultimately fall in love with it.
Mental health is a real issue. Stress is a silent
killer. Staying sane mentally is equally important as staying fit physically.
When symptoms of mental stress seem to be interfering too much with your
ability to perform daily tasks, it is advised to seek consultation from a
certified professional.
